Within

On the inner demons

Dutch metal band The Unslain releases “Within”, a tempestuous song about the pains of drug abuse. With a great balance of their old school metal, modern metal and metalcore influences that bring to mind reminiscences of Metallica, Lamb of God and Trivium, the song perfectly represents the band’s current sound.

Commenting on the song’s lyrics, the band members confess, “The first inspiration came from a friend who struggled with drug abuse”. “he constantly struggled and had to choose between the drugs or his health or family”.

The severity and difficulty of the choices that addiction forces on people became a central part of the song, portraying a dichotomy the band describes as a choice between the “drugs-you” and the “real-you”.

The video clip for “Within” was recorded in a real-life rehabilitation clinic in the band’s hometown, which helped them build a deeper connection with the reality of this condition.

Recorded in August 2020 in the Hillroad Records studio in The Netherlands, the band enlisted the help of producer Daan Nieboer and featured guitarist Jeroen van der Lee from the band XRaiders, who wrote and recorded the song’s solo.

The Unslain debuted with the LP “We Will Battle” in 2018, in 2019 they earned the audience prize in the Dutch Wacken metal battle contest, they also released various singles in 2020 and 2022.

In 2022 they signed with Rexius Records. They’re now preparing for the release of” Within” on April 7th.
