Gothenburg-based duo MAKN could be described as a game of complementary creative forces. Their electropop is heavily influenced by EDM icons like Marshmello and Zedd, but they’re constantly redefining their sound in favor of pop. After a two-year hiatus, they were back this summer with the 80s-influenced single “You Don’t Need Me Anymore”. They’re now preparing for the release of “Someone”, a song made in collaboration with Anton Björklund (frontman for Travel with the Sun).

Martin Thölin and Joakim Paasonen met in high school and were members of progressive rock act Blacklight before becoming MAKN. “We’re both from an instrumental background, but have transitioned into songwriting and production.”, they tell us. “It’s something we want to combine more often in the future!”

The duo quickly realized they had a strong creative synergy. MAKN debuted in 2018 with the energetic festival-sounding anthem “Hajar Ni?”. Two more singles followed in 2019, with the recurrent theme of an upbeat EDM sound that reminds of early 2010s acts like Alan Walker.

The sound of MAKN started shifting towards ear-friendly synths and pop vocals in the summer of 2021. Their single “You Don’t Need Me Anymore” was toplined by pop singer Latch, accompanied by a video that was filmed in their hometown.

MAKN got signed to Gothenburg-based Rexius Records in 2020 and is currently preparing for the release of “Someone” in October.
